The Field of All Possibilities
The Field of All PossibilitiesMy 22 year old son, Chandler and I leave tomorrow to drive out west to begin our 7- month walk across America to move forward the understanding that women’s full participation and contribution, in partnership with men, is essential now to resolve our global challenges.
These last days have been filled with umpteen errands and emotions:
A nine hour flight to D.C. from Sweden, bunking in with a friend.
What the hell was I thinking when I committed to this walk??????? The fear of failure crowds into my mind.
At the print shop, I come away with a copy of my messages and sound bites, memorizing, practicing, repeating them over and over until they are absorbed into the nuclei of my every cell.
Finishing these last days, I head back to my friend’s house, idling at the red light, watching the play of cars and clouds and rain and people everywhere surrounding me, yet scurrying away in every direction.
I fall through the front door, grab a bite to eat and fire up the computer. Furiously tapping out an email to my sister, Jenny, I can no longer contain the torrent of mixed emotions that pulses hard within me: sheer excitement, rampant enthusiasm, eager anticipation--- all inextricably intertwined with the wild blackness of fear, grief, panic, terror, pining, longing, sadness, fretting, and stewing.
“I keep trying to prepare myself mentally and spiritually,” I frantically tell her, “for stepping into the unknown. Tell me! How does one do that????”
Soon enough comes pressing back her reply:
“You're asking ME about stepping into the unknown? My dear sister, how quickly we forget....you taught me everything I know about such things... keep the faith; keep your eyes open and turned to the skies, for there will be surprises waiting for you, little tokens of joy to feed you along your path. You are stepping not into the unknown, but into the field of ALL POSSIBILITIES.”
The field of all possibilities, I muse to myself later, lying in bed, in the utter dark and peaceful, calm stillness, one cheek pressed into the soft tee shirt left by my husband, breathing in deeply his scent he left behind.
The field of all possibilities.
I am walking across America to move forward the understanding that women’s full participation and contribution, in partnership with men, is essential now to resolve our global challenges.
I’m going to walk, run, skip, leap, dance, flit, fly and flow through this field of all possibilities!
